For: I'M GOING TO SEE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA! 1/18/06 Well, I finally got this page up! I was originally going to make this costume for a singing competition - but the fact that it cost over 200 dollars made me loose the opportunity to make it.
Here's a list of all of my materials so far. Pictures. I promise. 1 Yard Cotton Twill - For the bodice lining
I had alot of compromising to do. Well, I guess that's what happens when you don't have an unlmited amount of money (sigh...) But I'll make do. I also bought my buttons at Joann's, too. It's too early to calculate how much trim I'm going to need. There are atleast three rows of three different shades of blue in the American Version. I need to die the edges of my trim for the neckline. Find appliques, find lace for the sleeves, and not to mention the multicolored braid for the neckline and sleeves! Ah! So much to do! Only so much time till February! January 31, 2006 YES! EVERYTHING HAS ARRIVED! Well, I got my patterns delievered last saturday, and started working on everything. The bodice is a dream to fit together! It just might be a tad difficult to adjust it to what I need. I also need to sew some of the closures (yea, i didn't use a busk, i know...) on my corset in order to continue, which I really have to finish tonight. Exams are finally over! I made the petticoat, and it has the perfect fullness behind the knees. I just want to add more netting to the top layer to give that part more "umph" or lift...better words, I know. February 5, 2006 Well guys! Here are the pictures of my muslin and newly dyed fabric! And here's the dyed fabric! June 13, 2006 Wow, it has been a while! Well, I might go see Phantom in Las Vegas, and want to wear my wishing gown there - so I have totally taken it apart, and am now in the process of dyeing it a deeper color, adding a hoop to the bottom of the petticoat, making a new bustle pad, fixing the drapery and the closures, and basically just repairing it together. List of things to do:
I have less than two weeks to finish this before vacation... June 17, 2006 List of things to do (elongated):
Boy do I still have alot to do... :( Although, I did add a hoop to the bottom of my petticoat, so now there is more support in the back! I also took about four yards of nylon net, bunched it up, and stuck it up the petticoat, so now there is more support for the drapery. Complete undid the skirt, and sewed it back togehter by hand to make sure everything draped correctly! the bodice is a nightmare... and I still can't find the good velvet!! June 18, 2006 Here are just a few pictures to compare how I have changed the dress so far: (Before and After) What I mainly did was remove all of the drapery on the waistband. I centered the apron, and gathered the sides to the waist band s that it would be more puffy, unlike how flat it is in the first picture. I also removed the panniers, and gathered them also, so that they would have more body and shape, and not be so ugly and lay flat like they do in the first picture also. I took about six yards of 72" wide netting, bunched it up into a ball, and just stuck it into the petticoat for the picture, so it still needs to be secured. I also removed the second hoop from the hoop skirt I used for my Think of Me gown, and pinned it to the hem of my wishing gown. It looks pretty darn good when it's hanging, but I'm scared of how it will look when I'm actually wearing it... The dyeing will be completed tonight, if all goes well! By the way, I couldn't find any nice silk velvet at a good price - so *sighs...* I'm going to order 7 yards of Denver Fabric's Triple Velvet. To give you a good clue, the velvet is cheap, so therefore, you get cheap results... If I were a rich girl... :). On the other hand, I also need lining for this darn cape, so that means, I'll have to order more hang loose lining, about seven yards, which, by the way, has done outstanding in its job to line my all of my drapery. I really want to make a petticoat out of this stuff! June 19, 2006 People seem to like them, so here - more pictures!!!
The First picture is a random picture of the dye, don't ask... The second picture is a picture of the white ribbon after sitting in the dyebath for an hour. It worked out perfectly, becuase the ribbon I dyed was 100% polyester, and it only tinted, which was exactly what I wanted. I got a great bargain on this at Joann's. Three spools (each spool 10 yards each) for only 99 cents. The third, fourth, and fifth pictures are random pictures of the dyeing process I took. The sixth picture is a picture of the fabric after beig dyed, still wet. It really bothers me how the color is darker when the fabric is wet... The seventh through eleventh picture are just comparisons of the original fabric, and of the newly dyed fabric (on the right). The last picture is a photo of the waterfall drapery unfolded, which took me about an hour to slowly remove the messy stitch as the top, then reheat the glue till it was perfectly pliable so it could be removed. Never again... Later... I've discovered even more that I need to add to the dress which I don't already have!! I was watching the videos of when I went backstage. The cuffs are not entirely made of velvet. Only the underneath part is. I wish I could take screencaps, but there are now copywrite laws on all of the players, and it's really annoying me... Things I realized I still need:
June 21, 2006 More Progress Pictures.... Note that all of the trims in these pictures are pinned on...which explains why their a little weird looking. I finally figured out something with the appliques by going to WalMart and A.C. Moore and just picking up whatever was blue shaded and looked good. Not the best, though... For the braid trim, I took inspiration from Orianna on TV and the Phantomess.com Forum. She told me that she found three colors of satin cord and just braided them. Genius!! I found white and navy, but no light blue, so I dyed half of the white light blue. Note - the trim I used was only 20% cotton and 80% rayon, but it dyed very quickly. All I did was dip it in, give it a swirl, and then remove it, and it was already a dark shade of blue. Thank God most of the dye washed out. Just a few nonsense pictures of how I dyed the edges of the lace. Not hte best, if you ask me. I took inspiration from Kristinamy on the Phantomess.com Forums. (I'm just stealing all of this from everyone else! No, I'm just kidding, lol.) I placed a little bit of dye and added a very teeny tiny amount of water with a little bit of salt, then I dabbed the edge of a sponge into it, and very gently dabbed the dye on the very edge of the trim. The dye spread, unfortunately, maybe because I wasn't being careful, and didn't dye each new part on a new piece of paper with no dye on it... I have a photo of the back of my wishing gown as it currently stands - unfinished and hideous! I had to undo the back of the bodice, and have yet to insert a panel so it will fit nicely. I took these pictures without the netting underneath, so the back of the dress behind my knees is flat. I do, however, have the hoop in the bottom in, which adds quite a bit of oomph. A picture of the trim I found which has to be painted navy blue, because RIT dye can't do anything for polyester. Not bad for $2.99 per yard, but I've seen cheaper... The final pictures are pictures of the stripes on the dress, which I pinned on. It looks terrible because this is the black trim I bought before, thinking I could somehow make it navy. I went around yesterday, and did find some navy trim, so the black will be replaced with navy. The trim, is also pinned on... I don't know, I'm kind of afraid to start sewing all the trims, in fear that I'll have to take something out and start it all over again!! June 22, 2006 Woke up really early today to try to get some progress done. Well, I finished sewing the trim onto the Waterfall Drapery. It took me an hour to sew each individual row on, and it's still not very - good.... July 21, 2006 It's been more than two weeks since the Phantom spectacular, and i still can't get those pictures from the other computer!! Well, nothing exciting really happened, but I had a great time. The dress, unfortunately, didn't... While the dress does look better, it has alot more to go... |
